Sheffield Sword Club

Sheffield Sword Club has almost 90 members; it is open to all and whilst they can boast a few elite athletes who compete internationally, the core of the club is made up of adults and beginners who have been taught to fence through either local school partnerships, or beginner classes.

The club is keen to build on its strong foundations and is keen to push coach and volunteer development. This would see them able to expand the junior session of the club from two to a three sessions a week. Coaches could then specialise in a different weapons at each. To ensure the additional classes are successful, the club would need to recruit or train coaches who specialise in particular which is exactly what they propose they'll use their Cash 4 Clubs grant for.

Andrew Basford, Chair of Sheffield Sword Club, said: "As a club we're keen to develop and expand our junior section so this grant, which will enable us to send our coaches and volunteers on training courses, is definitely a step in the right direction.  With the £750 from Cash 4 Clubs we hope to get more people trained in foil, epee and sabre which will see us offer a higher level of training to club members.  It should also give us the capacity to train up to an additional 36 young people on a regular basis."
