Wrekin College Triathlon Club
Wrekin College Triathlon Club was formed in 2010 to provide juniors and adults with a triathlon club in the Telford area. The club has regular swim, bike and run sessions held in a safe and friendly environment encouraging local children to take part and experience triathlon. It has grown consistently over the last 18 months with a number of the junior athletes now recognised for their achievements by also being members of the West Midlands Academy squad.
The club aims to attract anyone in the local area interested in taking part in multi-sport events. All the junior sessions are run in accordance with the British Triathlon guidance on training and developing young athletes. On a regular basis the club runs events that encourage participation from local schools providing children in the area an opportunity to experience the sport. Its commitment to this is seen in an annual aquathlon event where in 2011 over 180 children took part enabling them to experience the different triathlon sports.
Peter Grimsdale, committee member , said: 'The Cash 4 Clubs grant will allow us to purchase £500 worth of training aids which means we can develop more coached sessions and include more athletes in those sessions. Currently the club coaches share equipment and balance the training sessions to ensure there is enough equipment to go around. But thanks to Cash 4 Clubs this will no longer be a problem, and we can actually take on more athletes!'
