Phoenix United Football Club
Phoenix United is a relatively new inner city youth club and football project in Aston, Birmingham. It has been operating for 5 years, and has made great progress in the local area. Players range between 5 and 20 years old, the majority of who are from black and ethnic communities, living in deprived and disadvantaged conditions across the city. Many of these young people are termed 'at risk' as they are either already participating in, or are in danger of becoming involved in anti social behaviour.
Youth membership is currently just over 300; all of the players receive weekly coaching which allows them to develop new skills and gives them a chance to express themselves. Above all, the club wants its members to have fun. A grant request was submitted as the club is now in desperate need of new kit - not only has the existing kit been used continuously for three years, the rise in membership numbers has created extra demand.
Scott Burrell, Committee Member, said: "Our Cash 4 Clubs grant of £750 is going to allow us to purchase much needed new kit for many of our junior teams. With so many young people playing and training with us we hope that this investment in our club will mean those families with financial constraints will still be able to see their children take part in sport."
