Gwent Sword Club

Gwent Sword Club is the only fencing club in Gwent and operates at three venues in the area. The club has around 80 members, who range in age from 11 to 74, and with a range in ability from complete novices through to international and British champions.

While fencing is often seen as an elitist sport, Gwent Sword club is anything but elite, with weekly club sessions taking place in a comprehensive school, a community centre on a council estate and a college sports centre. The club keeps its subscription fees to a minimum in order to encourage a diverse range of participants, including some disabled members.

Gwent Sword Club has been able to maintain a friendly and aspiring environment for all, with even international level fencers remaining to train with the club and to help encourage others. However, fencing kit is often quite expensive. In order to keep membership open to all the club needs to purchase new and replacement equipment for members to borrow until they decide whether to obtain their own kit.

The Cash 4 Clubs sports grant of £1,000 was awarded to the club to enable them to maintain a pool of equipment and protective clothing for the members to borrow.

Carl Difford, Club Secretary said "We are really grateful for the grant from Cash 4 Clubs. Our aim is to provide for a wide range of abilities but at a cost which is not prohibitive for the individuals. We currently have seven new club members - ranging in age from 11 to 45 - on a beginners' course and making full use of club equipment. Meanwhile, our women's foil team won the Welsh Championship last month and we have two young fencers in the Welsh team in this summer's UK School Games."
