Roseland Gig Club

The sport of pilot gig racing started in the days when vessels around the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly needed a pilot to help them navigate their way through difficult waters to find safe harbour or negotiate a safe passage.

The gig, a 32 foot traditional wooden working boat, has six single-oar rowing positions and a cox.

Roseland Gig Club, established in 1986, has 30 senior and 15 junior members. The clubs offers an important and needed facility for the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, providing an excellent amenity for all ages, abilities and backgrounds to be able to enjoy the water and learn the necessary sills of rowing and water safety.

Despite ongoing fundraising, more money was needed and the £1,000 grant allowed them to buy more lifejackets, radios and paddles for the juniors.
