Andover Athletic Club

Andover Athletic Club provides track and field athletics in Andover, Hampshire. They are a focused club that offers tailored opportunities for people of all abilities, as well as a strong social side where they organise a range of social activities. Their membership ranges from children aged 8 years of age to adults competing in the over 75 category

The club is an integral part of the local community with strong links with local groups including sports clubs, local schools, local authority, School Sports Partnership, and local businesses. The club currently has over 200 active members with a goal to increase this membership base to over 300 members by 2012.

Andover Athletic Club's other goals include developing a coaching workforce across all athletic disciplines (run, jump, throw). They are keen to further develop their 2 groups aimed at young children and people new to road running. Additionally the club is looking to develop a new indoor centre which will provide one of the first athletic specific indoor facilities in the South East outside of London.

The Cash 4 Clubs sports grant of £1,000 was awarded to the club to assist them in establishing a sprints and hurdles academy aimed at young people aged 11-18. This project will involve the club in purchasing a range of specialist equipment including starting blocks, light weight hurdles, coaching books/DVD's, hiring external coaches to provide support to club coaches and a range of resistance equipment including parachutes, harnesses, sleds, etc. This initiative should have a massive effect on both performance and retention levels across the club. The project will enable the club to cater for people of all ages and abilities as well as hoping to produce a number of athletes who can become county, regional and nationally ranked as a result.

"The grant from Cash for Clubs will make a huge difference to Andover Athletic Club and will contribute towards an exciting project which is aimed at significantly increasing our current membership levels and allowing talented athletes to achieve their true potential". James Coney.
