North London Shotokan Karate

NLSK Karate club opened in 2005 and has currently has 40 members aged 5 to 60. The club was developed to provide an inclusive, safe and friendly environment where members of the local community could keep fit and healthy. With youth crime on nearby estates at an all time high the club also offers an alternative to anti social activities.

The club sees karate is a focus; it is a way of channelling young people's energies into something positive and worthwhile and whilst keen to ensure the growth and development of its membership, their main goal is to be able to facilitate participation for all. With their Cash 4 Clubs grant, they will offer so many more children the opportunity to participate in the sport for the first time.

John DeBono, Instructor, said: "We're really proud of our club and our open door policy and this grant will ensure we can continue to get many more young people involved in karate. The £750 we've been awarded by Cash 4 Clubs will be used to purchase protective body equipment, such as hand mitts and foot guards, so as to remove some of the financial barriers to participation in the sport."
