MATT PRIOR DELIVERS A GRAND DONATION TO PORTSLADE CRICKET CLUB
ENGLAND star Matt Prior today presented a £1,000 cheque to Portslade Cricket Club in Hove, East Sussex, as part of a campaign of investment in community sports clubs. The grant, provided by Cash 4 Clubs, signals the start of a nationwide push to provide much needed funding for grass roots sport.
The scheme, funded by Betfair - the UK's largest online betting company, has announced it is to award significant funding to community sports clubs for a second consecutive year by extending the Cash 4 Clubs initiative nationwide.
In 2008 over £30,000 was distributed to 30 sports organisations in specific regions across the UK, but the scheme is now being opened-up to clubs in all areas of the country. Clubs are invited to apply for the funding online, with the first window for applications now open.
Commenting on the initiative, Matt Prior said: "Grass roots clubs like Portslade CC are the future of English cricket. I wouldn't be where I am today without the opportunities I had through my local club when I was younger. The importance of investing in the development of youngsters is essential to the future of the game."
Portslade Cricket Club is a community club run by volunteers for local children in Hove. They have been burgled five times in the last 14 months, so the grant is a real boost for the club.
Betfair CSR Manager Georgina Corbett added: "Betfair is passionate about supporting grassroots sport, so we are delighted to be expanding the scheme nationwide in 2009. It's a great time to be involved with sport and Cash 4 Clubs can hopefully play an important role in helping clubs to sustain and develop themselves."
Grants can be used to improve facilities, purchase new equipment and generally invest in the sustainability of their club. Awards of up to £1,000 are made on a quarterly basis, with applications judged by an independent committee. To apply clubs need to fill out an application available at www.cash-4-clubs.com.
